(Motion 4823 Approved 27/02/2025)

Policy

This policy covers the Section definitions for APS National Exhibitions.  To be an APS National Exhibition they must be allocated an APS [Exhibition] approval number.

The policy and definitions document does not include:

  • Australian International Exhibitions that have APS patronage as they will be governed by either FIAP or PSA definitions.
  • Australian National Exhibitions that have APS Patronage who can choose to follow APS, FIAP, PSA or any other definitions.
  • Any APS competition or exhibitions that is not an APS National Exhibition.

This document should be read in conjunction with the APS NATIONAL IMAGE CONDITIONS and the APS National Exhibition Definitions.

Sections

  • APS will provide Definitions for commonly or frequently used themes or categories (ie: nature, open, travel, photojournalism, monochrome). These may change over time as different approaches to themes or categories develop.
  • At times a Section may be a boutique section and there is no Definition listed within this policy. In this case the APS Exhibition Coordinator (or similar) would determine and present the definition for that specific section. If this boutique section became more prevalent, then it may be added to the published definitions.

Definitions

The overarching responsibility of the APS MC is to support Definitions that are contextually appropriate for APS National Exhibitions.  The APS may choose to adopt or align its definitions to those presented by FIAP and or PSA, noting that:

  • Where FIAP and PSA adopt the same Definition for a Section then it enhances the rationale for APS to also adopt the same definition.
  • Where FIAP and PSA have different approaches to a definition for a Section, then APS may choose to adopt either or neither definition.
  • APS reserves the right to always choose its own definitions.

Approval and Amendments

  • This policy document should be formally reviewed at least every 3 years by MC.
  • Definitions can be reviewed at any time by the MC and any changes to a Definition can be via an endorsement of the majority of MC members (a formal Motion is not required).
  • Any amendments to this policy or the approved Definitions should result in the version on the website being noted as ‘updated as at XX/XX/XXXX.
  • The approval of this document does not negate any member right or opportunity to submit a Motion or less formal recommendation to MC for consideration of any current or future Definition.
