Alwyn Kucks LAPS SSAPS

I began working in photography in 1949 as a box Brownie “expert”. Since then I graduated through various cameras to a 4x5 monorail. I have been a member of various camera clubs since 1959. I have won many photographic competitions and awards. I have been a member of the Australian Photographic Society Inc. since 1979.

In 1951, I began to train as a Primary School teacher and graduated to serve in many schools in Southern Queensland from Brisbane to Eromanga. In 1972 I further trained as one of the first group of Primary School Teacher-Librarians. In 1974 I became a Regional Library Adviser serving in all primary schools in the South Western and Darling Downs State Educational Regions of Queensland.

In 1977 when I was employed as a “Regional library Adviser” with the Education Department, I attended a seven week full time course in Media Studies covering(1) Communication Theory (2) Practical still photography (3) practical video production (4) practical audio visual production (5) practical super 8 movie production..

For approximately 13 years I taught evening photography courses to adults at the Toowoomba College of TAFE. I found my large library of photography books a marvellous resource to help with the many problems that arose.

During my 12 years as a Teacher-Librarian at Gabbinbar State School, I conducted a photography club and taught photographic skills to children from age nine to fourteen. Many of my students both child and adult have won prizes in competitions and have been successful to varying degrees in professional photography.
During the years I have judged dozens of photographic competitions at District Shows and Camera Clubs as well as being a Photographic Society of Queensland Accredited judge.

For some 20 years I traded as a professional wedding, portrait, news, sporting, social you-name-it photographer in Toowoomba and District. During those years, I have had thousand of photographs published in all kinds of publications within Australia and overseas. During the last ten of those years, I operated as a full time professional, photographing anything that came across the door. I have had dozens of educational kits and books of photographs published by R N Education and others to be used in Kindergartens, Preschools and Primary Schools through-out Australia.

In 1990 I retired from teaching to become a full time professional photographer. In 1992 I was accepted into the ranks of the Australian Institute of Professional Photography in the Wedding Portrait field. I finally gave the business away (literally) on the 30th June 2000. Since then I have taken part to a greater extent in the activities of the Toowoomba Photographic Society Inc., Queensland Photographic Society Inc. and the Australian Photographic Society Inc. Within APS, I am now heavily involved in the day to day running of the Society and to a lesser extent Print Division.

Currently, I shoot digitally and use my spare time to enter photographic competitions with colour prints featuring a diverse range of subjects.

Another lifetime interest has been in woodcraft, I cabinet make and turn.

I have been married for nearly 50 years to Sylvia who has been an ever ready supporter of my photographic escapades. Without her unfailing assistance many of my activities would never have happened.
